Everything I read so far states the heads are too close to the towers to fit exhaust and that was why they updated the explorer design when they started putting them in. Id still have to buy a tranny for the mod since the 4.0 tranny is the small bellhousing unit that fits the small V6 blocks (like used in the Bronco II).

This includes: Heads, cam, lifters, timing chain, timing chain cover, water pump, engine mounts, and all sorts of other stuff.   • I just acquired a 1988 Bronco 2 (manual trans)in really nice condition. I also own a 1994 Explorer w 4.0 (auto trans) which has low miles of 75k. I hate this vehicle and would like to replace the 2.9 engine in the Bronco with the 4.0 from the Explorer. My online research seems to indicate that a bronco later than 87 and an Explorer 94 or earlier should be nearly bolt in. Problem is I cannot ... The Late Windsor pattern also fits Cleveland and M-block engines (except for the 351M), the 240 and 300 inline-six, early 4.6-liter modular engines (casting number F1AE and F2VE). FE-block engines, Ford Y-block, Lincoln Y-block, Flathead and 385-series engines all use a specific bolt pattern that won't interchange with any other engine.
